Application guidelines by type of application

The applicant is committed to provide a report if the grant is awarded.

The grant may only be used for the purpose for which it was applied for and awarded.

The doctoral dissertation grant is a working grant for researchers working on their doctoral dissertation. The amount of tax-free grant corresponds with the so-called artist grant. The law on the social security of grant recipients requires a pension insurance contract if certain conditions are met (see https://www.mela.fi/en/grant-and-scholarship-recipients/). The grant is awarded for a maximum period of 12 months. Dissertation grants are available for a maximum of two years in total. The recipient must be free from other employment and able to concentrate on research.

The amount of a working grant in year 2025

€2.196 / month (insurance included) | €1.916 / month (without insurance)

The post doc grant is a working grant for researchers starting their postdoctoral career. The grant is for working and it does not include expenses. The law on the social security of grant recipients requires a pension insurance contract if certain conditions are met (see https://www.mela.fi/en/grant-and-scholarship-recipients/). The grant may be applied for 4 to 9 months period. The grant recipient must be free from other employment and able to concentrate on research.

The amount of a post doc working grant in year 2025 is €2.930 / month (insurance included).

Senior researchers coordinating or planning a project for research group, may apply for a research grant. Research grant can be applied for working (a working grant, for 12 months maximum), purchased services, materials and other expenses. Please note that it is possible to apply for travel expenses related to the research project with a separate travel grant application (travel expenses may not be included in the research grant application). Doctoral researchers cannot apply for a research grant. 

The working grant in the year 2025

Travel grants are awarded for congress and research trips abroad. Domestic trips are not supported.

The grant may be applied for travel expenses (according to the public transport fees), accommodation and a participation fee. The Foundation does not support any other costs (meals, travelling day allowances, poster printing, ESTA, visa application). Please note! The grant can’t be applied if travel expenses are covered by the university before the decision date (the university will not accept grants retrospectively).

When applying a travel grant for a congress trip, following attachments should be included in the application:

  1. an invitation to the congress / congress programme (a short version)
  2. a presentation abstract (mandatory)
  3. an abstract acceptance notice (may be sent by email as PDF document to the grant secretary after the application deadline)
  4. a statement on the content of the participation fee

When applying a travel grant for a research trip, required attachments are

  1. a programme for the trip / a work plan and
  2. a breakdown of expenses

A researcher residency grant entitles the recipient for a free residency in the Granö Centre in Villa Tammekann designed by Alvar Aalto, located in Tartu (Estonia). The grant can be applied for the duration of one to two weeks. The facilities and the environment are ideal, for instance, for a working period which requires particular peace or meetings of a small research or work group. Breakfast and use of sauna are included. Travel costs to Tartu and back are covered by the recipient.

In some cases, you can apply for a grant for a purpose other than those listed above. Such purposes may include study trips abroad or inviting international speakers/researchers to Turku. The foundation does not provide support for the costs of language checking, translating or publishing scientific publications. When applying for a grant for any other purpose, the application must describe as precisely as possible the purpose for which the grant is requested. An estimate of the costs must be submitted with the application.

Purpose of the register

Every year, the Turku University Foundation awards grants to teachers, researchers, research groups and postgraduate students at the University of Turku.
Personal data is collected for processing grant applications and for distributing funds.
The data collected are used for internal reporting by the controller.

Data content of the register

The following information is collected of the grant applicants:

  • information on the applicant (name, date of birth, contact details, information on the studies and completed degrees, previous grants)
  • information on the use of the grant (doctoral dissertation grant, post doc grant, research grant, travel grant)
  • information for the payment of the grant (personal identity code, account number)

Regular data sources

Regular sources of information include information provided by grant applicants, which are provided to the controller through the electronic grant administration information system.

Regular disclosure of register data

The names of the grant recipients and the titles of the studies are public information.

In order to perform the duties assigned to them, the authorities have the right to obtain information about the data subjects from the register. Data is disclosed from the register as follows:

  • Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela): Social security-related enquiries about working with a grant
  • Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution (Mela): information for pension insurances of grant recipients
  • Finnish Tax Administration: annual notification of grants awarded to individuals amounting to at least EUR 1,000
  • Inquiries by authorities concerning grants awarded to a specific person

Personal data contained in the register is not transferred outside the EU or the EEA.

Principles of register protection

The controller has an electronic grant administration information system. The maximum archiving time in the electronic system is 10 years.

Access rights to the electronic grant administration information system are limited within the controller’s organisation to those responsible for grants. Data produced by the information system, other data in the register processed electronically and their backups are stored appropriately protected in a cloud.

Informing the data subject

The data subject is informed of the application of the Personal Data Act when they apply for a grant through the electronic grant administration information system used by the controller.

Right of inspection

Notwithstanding the secrecy provisions, after having provided the necessary details for seeking information, the grant applicant has the right to know what data concerning them has been stored in the personal data register or that there is no data concerning them in the register.

The grant applicant may make a request related to the right of inspection in person or by contacting the controller in writing.

Correction of information

The grant applicant may request the information to be corrected. The controller shall rectify any inaccurate data or supplement incomplete data. A grant applicant may submit a request for rectification to the controller. The controller shall process the request without delay.

Deletion and transfer of register data

The data subject has the right to withdraw their consent to the processing of personal data and to request the controller to delete the data concerning them. The data subject also has the right to receive personal data concerning them to transmit the data to another controller. The information shall be delivered in PDF format by e-mail to the e-mail address in the register.


The processing of personal data does not involve automatic data processing or profiling.


The Turku University Foundation’s spring call for applications is open in February and the autumn call in September. The exact dates will be announced before the opening of the call for applications from the News section of this website. Please note that the application deadlines for the Technology Fund are different from the Foundation’s other application deadlines. For this fund, the application deadlines can be found on the Utu Tech Jobs website.

You can only apply for grants during the application periods when the online application forms are open. Only grant applications submitted via the electronic system will be processed. Applications cannot be accepted after the closing date.
